Recently, the construction of Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base Project of ushered in new progress.

According to the official website of Weihai Municipal People’s Government on May 22nd, recently, Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base Project in Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone has come the latest progress, the construction of Wuhu Shipyard Joint Workshop with a total construction area of 87,000 square meters has been completed, and the workshop’s intelligent equipments have been installed in place.

With a total investment of about 2 billion yuan (about $276 million), the Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base Project has been selected as a key project for green, low-carbon and high-quality development of Shandong Province in 2024. The project focuses on the construction of a green and environmentally friendly high-tech ship park, which mainly produces and manufactures ro-ro ships, liquefied natural gas (LNG)/methanol dual-fuel powered oil tankers as well as 80,000 DWT Panamax bulk carriers and other ships.

After putting into production, the park is expected to have an annual output value of 5 billion yuan (about $691 million), with a tax revenue of nearly 200 million yuan, and solving the employment of more than 2,000 people.

As a main project, Wuhu Shipbuilding Joint Workshop has brand-new production technology process, digital intelligent production line and control mode. The overall height of the workshop is 28 meters, the span of the workshop is 156 meters, and the total amount of steel is about 12,000 tons. The park related personnel said, “The automation rate of the whole workshop has reached about 80%, and although it has not yet been officially put into production, the enterprise’s orders have been scheduled until 2030.”

It is understood that in April this year, the French shipping company EuroGreen Maritime announced the construction of four new methanol dual-fuel MR IMO II product tankers, which would be built in Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base Project, with a total value of more than $250 million, which is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2026 to 2027.

It is reported that Weihai City has unique shoreline resources and port conditions, and it has more than 46 large-scale marine and offshore equipment industry chain enterprises. In order to further expand the advantages of the industry chain, last year Weihai City introduced the project of Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base.

At present, the overall project construction is nearing completion, infrastructure projects have entered the “refining” stage. Inside the plant, the workers are conducting joint commissioning of large-scale equipments for early production and operation. Meanwhile, the project service provider is also rationalizing the supporting enterprises, helping them to reduce costs and increase efficiency, and boosting the healthy and rapid development of the offshore equipment industry.

It is reported that in August 2022, Wuhu Shipyard officially signed a contract with Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone for the Wuhu Shipyard Weihai Green Marine Technology Industrial Base Project, with a total investment of about 2 billion yuan, covering a total area of about 680 acres, and aiming to reach the conditions for starting production in March 2024. After put into production, it is expected to achieve an annual output value of 5 billion yuan.
