On May 17th, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with China Shipbuilding Trading (CSTC), signed a construction contract for 4+4 methanol dual-fuel 65,000 DWT bulk carriers with Lemissoler Navigation of Cyprus.
Industry sources said the order is worth more than $320 million (about RMB 2.316 billion), and the cost of a single unit is more than $40 million.
This is the first batch of methanol dual-fuel 65,000 DWT bulk carrier projects awarded to Chinese shipyards. With this, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has entered methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier construction, which further consolidates its international leading position in the construction of green ships and expands its market share in the bulk carrier field.
Designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI), the bulk carrier has an overall length of 199.9 meters and a beam of 32.26 meters, which equipped with two 1200 cubic meter methanol fuel tanks.
Its free end of the dual-fuel main engine drives a new shaft generator which is different from the traditional shaft generators. It has the advantages of more rational utilization of engine room space and higher energy utilization efficiency.
At present, the global shipping industry is vigorously promoting green alternative fuels to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Meanwhile, with the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and the FuelEU, ships choosing green methanol as a fuel have the potential to reduce the costs associated with carbon emissions and further enhance operational competitiveness.
Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding focuses on green ships and develops comprehensively towards green transformation through continuous exploration. In recent years, the company has successfully delivered many green ships, such as 1400 TEU dual-fuel container ships, hybrid oil-electricity business ships, 9500 m³ multi-purpose gas carriers, etc. It has provided desulfurization tower installation services for shipowners all over the world, and has taken methanol-dual-fuel ships as an important direction scope.
