Changhong International set to build two 11,500 TEU dual-fuel container ships

On May 15th, Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard Co. LTD (Changhong International) set to build the 5th and 6th 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships for the world-famous shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

Classed by LR, this series of container ships have an overall length of 335 meters and a beam of 45.6 meters with a design speed of 20 knots. Designed and developed independently by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), this series of contain ships is a new generation of 10,000 TEU-class dual-fuel container ships with full intellectual property rights.

The container ship is of double-island design and equipped with the largest C-type LNG fuel tanks in its class. Its range in both LNG and oil mode allows for single round trips on classic China-Europe or China-US routes, ensuring flexibility in the owner’s operating schedule.

Furthermore, this container ship is characterized by cleanliness, environmental protection and low carbon emission, and can save about 5% fuel compared with existing ships of the same type. Its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is about 40% lower than the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) stringent Phase III emission baseline.

In addition, the container ship design has a very good technical foresight, not only adopting dual-power propulsion in the form of LNG and conventional fuel oil, but also adopting the industry’s most cutting-edge ammonia-fueled “Ready” design.

It is reported that Changhong International’s hand-held order for 20 ships of MSC, including 10 11,500 TEU container ships, 10 10,300 TEU container ships, which are all LNG dual-fuel container ships.
