COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) completed the first Chinese VLGC desulfurization conversion

On May 8, the very large gas carrier (VLGC) “Changxingyuan”, which was refitted with desulphurization device by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan), was completed and started sailing ahead of schedule.

“Changxingyuan” is a very large fully-cooled liquefied gas carrier owned by COSCO Shipping Investment Dalian and the first VLGC flying Chinese flag. It measures 226 meters in length, 36.6 meters in breadth and 22.2 meters in depth, and adopts Type-A independent liquid tanks with a cargo hold capacity of 83,000 m³.

It is a high-tech, high-performance, high-value-added green ship with low energy consumption, low emissions and low noise. Its Attained EEDI is lower than the EEDI baseline value by 40%, which directly meets the requirements of EEDI Phase III.

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) mainly carries out the conversion of the desulfurization device and special inspection of “Changxingyuan”, involving the overhaul of main engine and auxiliary machinery, dismantling and inspection of liquid cargo cryogenic safety valves, dismantling and inspection of liquid cargo pumps, dismantling and inspection of cargo compressors, and thermal insulation repair of liquid cargo tanks.

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) completed the desulphurization conversion in only 16 days, and finally succeeded in achieving the set target of 27 days for completion, which is 3 days ahead of the scheduled repair period, and was highly praised by the shipowner.
