Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) has delivered two very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the shipping subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned oil company Pertamina.
On May 9, Hanwha Ocean held a delivery ceremony for two 91,000m3 VLGCs “Pertamina Gas Caspia” and “Pertamina Gas Dahlia” which were built for PIS at Okpo Shipyard. The delivery ceremony was attended by Rabin Indrajad Hattari, Indonesian Minister of State-owned Enterprises, Zelda Wulan Kartika, Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea, and Yoki Firnandi, CEO of PIS.
The new 300-meter-long VLGC, built with the latest environmentally friendly technology, is designed to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well as petrochemical products in the form of propylene and ammonia, which will be deployed on international routes.
Rabin Indrajad Hattari said, “The delivery of the two new-built VLGCs will strengthen PIS’s role as the lifeline for energy distribution in Indonesia and will demonstrate international cooperation, technological sophistication, and a strong collective commitment to supporting Indonesia’s energy security, as well as enhance PIS’s role in strengthening Indonesia’s energy infrastructure capabilities.”
With the delivery of two newbuildings, the company’s VLGC will increase to seven, making it one of the largest VLGC owners in Southeast Asia with an average age of 3.42 years, PIS noted.
Currently, there are 419 VLGCs in service worldwide, with an average age of 10.08 years.
