Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding wins 6 2400TEU methanol dual-fuel powered feeder container ships

According to MB Shipbrokers (formerly Maersk Broker), China’s Taiwan-based shipping company Evergreen Marine has ordered six 2,400 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered feeder container ships from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding at a cost of about $53 million each, with a total order value of about $318 million (about RMB 2.294 billion).

Deliveries of the new shipbuildings are expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

As early as late April, it was announced that Evergreen Marine plans to continue ordering methanol dual-fuel-powered containerships, which means that Evergreen Marine’s investment in newbuildings since 2021 will be raised to more than $10 billion.

If the above order is confirmed, it will be another cooperation between Evergreen Marine and Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding following the signing of 24 feeder container ships in 3 types in 2021.

According to the shipbuilding contract signed at that time, Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding was responsible for Evergreen Marine construction of two 1,800 TEU, 11 2,300 TEU and 11 3,000 TEU container ships, the cost of a single unit of about $ 28 million to $ 51 million, the total transaction price of $ 958 million to $ 1,098 million.

According to incomplete statistics, Evergreen Marine has placed a total of 82 container ship orders since 2021, mainly concentrated in China State Shipbuilding Group’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding, and South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard the four shipbuilding enterprises, the number of orders, respectively, for 9, 24, 41, 8 ships.

As the largest shipbuilding enterprise in South China, Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding has recently obtained several orders for container ships. Specifically, Arkas Group, the largest container ship owner in Turkey, has placed an order for 4+2 4,300 TEU container ships with Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding, which is valued at $240 million and is expected to be delivered to the shipowner between February and August 2028.

Thailand’s Regional Container Lines (RCL) has announced the exercise of an option on two 4,300 TEU container ships from Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding, bringing its order book for 4,300 TEU container ships at the shipyard to six, with delivery of the options expected in November and December 2027.

In previous news, RCL ordered 4,300 TEU container ships at a cost of $56.6 million, with the total value of the current order for six new units valued at $339.6 million, with the first four expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027.

It is worth noting that 4300TEU container ship is the largest container ship in scale undertaken by Huangpu Wenchong shipbuilding at present. The first order for this type of container ship was placed by RCL.
