Evergreen Marine to order six methanol dual-fuel feeder container ships

Taiwan-based liner giant Evergreen Marine Corp. plans to continue ordering methanol dual-fuel powered container ships, marking the company’s spending on new shipbuildings since 2021 will be raised to more than $10 billion.

According to Trade Winds, Evergreen Marine has initiated the latest bidding process for 2,400 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered feeder container ships and is seeking to order six newbuildings that can be delivered in 2027, with a total value of more than $320 million.

The above six new container ships are another new shipbuilding plan after Evergreen Marine placed an order for 24 16,000 TEU methanol duel-fuel powered container ships in 2023. If the order is officially placed, it means that Evergreen Marine has invested more than US$10 billion in the new shipbuilding field since 2021.

It is understood that the 24 large container ships ordered by Evergreen Marinelast year in Samsung Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard ( the joint venture shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding and Nihon Shipbuilding) were 16 and 8. The cost of a single container ship is about $196 million, and the total value of the order is about $4.704 billion.

According to incomplete statistics, Evergreen Marine has placed a total of 82 container ship orders since 2021. Orders are mainly concentrated in four shipbuilding enterprises, such as China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Huangpu-Wenchong Shipbuilding, South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries and Japan Shipbuilding, the number of orders for the four shipbuilders are 9, 24, 41, and 8 , respectively. Among them, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Samsung Heavy Industries and Japan Shipbuilding undertook are all large / ultra-large container ships, feeder container ships are undertaken by the CSSC Huangpu-Wenchong Shipbuilding.

No shipyard information has yet come to light regarding Evergreen Marine’s newbuilding program for six 2,400 TEU methanol dual-fuel feeder containers, but if it is a continuation of the signing tradition since 2021, CSSC Huangpu-Wenchong Shipbuilding may continue to be favored by the liner giant.

In recent years, methanol duel-fuel powered feeder container ships have become the main type of vessels received by CSSC Huangpu-Wenchong Shipbuilding in the field of container ships. In 2023 only, the shipbuilder has received 23+4 methanol duel-fuel powered feeder container ships.
