On April 19, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Dalian Shipbuilding and AET, a tanker company of Malaysian international shipping company MISC Group, signed a contract for the construction of two Liquid-Ammonia Dual Fuel Powered Aframax tankers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
What is more, AET has entered into time charter party contracts (TCP) with Malaysian company PETCO Trading Labuan Company (PTLCL), Petronas’ midstream services arm, for the tanker duo.
Through these vessels, PTLCL will be able to transport its products to customers worldwide while contributing to industry decarbonization by utilizing ammonia as a cleaner alternative to conventional fuel.
The signing of these contracts is said to represent a significant step forward in the partners’ efforts to make ammonia a viable fuel for the maritime industry.
The liquid-ammonia dual fuel powered Aframax tanker has an overall length of about 250 meters, a beam of 44 meters, a depth of 21.2 meters with a deadweight of about 113,000 tons. It adopts the latest self-developed ship design, with more excellent performance in energy consumption index, cargo carrying capacity and adaptability. This Aframax tanker is equipped with Win-GD liquid-ammonia dual-fuel main engine, which meets IMO Tier III and EEDI Stage III emission standards and adopts liquid ammonia as the main fuel, which effectively reduces the emission of carbon oxides and sulfur oxides.
This cooperation is the first time for MISC Group to cooperate with CSSC, and the successful signing of the project has opened a new journey of mutual trust and cooperation between the two sides.
This newly contracted project is the world’s first order for liquid ammonia fuel-powered tanker, and is another leading product of Dalian Shipbuilding after the world’s first LNG dual-fuel-powered VLCC and the world’s first methanol dual-fuel-powered VLCC.
Dalian Shipbuilding owns the complete independent intellectual property rights of this ship type, which is also a concentrated manifestation of Dalian Shipbuilding’s profound strength in the design and construction of green, environmentally friendly and highly efficient ships, and demonstrates its comprehensive strength in the whole process from development, design to construction.
This achievement also marks that the innovation ability and competitiveness of CSSC in the field of shipbuilding industry has once again stepped up to a new level. It is not only an important milestone in the development of China’s shipbuilding industry, but also a strong proof of China’s status and influence in the global shipbuilding field.
It profoundly demonstrates the shipowner’s firm determination and extraordinary courage to deepen the development in the field of zero-carbon shipping. Against the background of rising global environmental protection calls, the shipowner’s choice of liquid ammonia fuel-powered tankers, a cutting-edge technology, is undoubtedly a positive response to and a strong impetus for the development trend of green and low-carbon shipping in the future.
It is understood that oil tankers are the traditional advantageous ship type of Dalian Shipbuilding. Under the background of decarbonization and transformation of the shipping industry, Dalian Shipbuilding continuously promotes the transformation and upgrading of mainstream products, and actively provides green, safe and intelligent ship type solutions to the shipping industry.
