On April 17, OCTOPUS 12.6 (HL500), a 12,600 dwt multi-purpose vessel, and OCTOPUS 12, a 12,000 dwt multi-purpose vessel, which were developed and designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) of CSSC, were formally awarded the Approval-in-Principle (AIP) certificates by Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
These two types of vessels were jointly developed by SDARI, DNV and Toepfer Transport of Germany over a period of 8 months based on the concept of forward development and the modular platformized design of ships. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) of both vessels meets the requirements of Phase III, and the NOx emission meets the Tier III standard. They are equipped with the intelligent energy efficiency management system (DOSS-E) in the DOSS® system independently developed by SSE, which can choose either a two-stroke or a four-stroke engine and can also choose methanol as fuel.
OCTOPUS 12.6 (HL500) has significantly improved performance indicators compared to its predecessor, the 12,500 dwt multi-purpose vessel F500 (2014). It adopts single cargo hold design with two 250-ton deck Kringle cranes, and its main dimensions and lifting capacity are basically equivalent. The superstructure has been optimized from the aft to the bow, which provides a better view of steering maneuvering, increases the deck cargo area by about 40%, reduces fuel consumption by about 15% and is more suitable for the shipment of large engineering equipment.
Compared with the previous generation of 12,000 dwt mult-ipurpose vessel (2004), OCTOPUS 12 is more compact, with lower construction cost and better economy. It is equipped with two 80-ton deck cranes and adopts one large and one small double cargo hold design, which further increases the cargo hold capacity and reduces fuel consumption by about 56%, making it more suitable for loading general cargo and bulk cargo.
The OCTOPUS ship type can well cover the 12,000 dwt multi-purpose vessel series, which is conducive to shortening the whole construction cycle as well as facilitating the customer’s quick accounting of the construction cost.
The OCTOPUS 12.6 with a length of 149.9 meters and a capacity of 12,600 tons maintains the same bow and stern, it can be expanded into the OCTOPUS 12.6XL (lengthened version) – with a length of 159.9 meters and a capacity of 14,000 tons, or into the OCTOPUS 12.6XS ( shortened version) – with a length of 139.9 meters and a deadweight of 11,100 tons.
Based on the OCTOPUS 12 model, the 138.0-meter vessel with a deadweight of 12,000 tons can be expanded into the OCTOPUS 12XS (shortened version) – with a length of 128.0 meters and a deadweight of 10,700 tons.
