Guangxi Shipbuilding cut steel for an 8,500DWT general cargo carrier

On April 15, a steel cutting ceremony was held for the starting of the 8,500DWT general cargo carriers project constructed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Guangxi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., marking a new progress of the largest export project in the history of Guangxi’s shipbuilding industry development.

The construction contract was signed on October 19, 2023, which includes four confirmed general cargo carriers in force, two two-way optional general cargo carriers in force, and two intent general cargo carriers. Classed by RINA, the general cargo carrier has an overall length of 119.9 meters, a beam of 17 meters, a depth of 9.3 meters, a design draught of 6.5 meters and a maximum draught of 7 meters with a design speed of 13.2 knots and a maximum deadweight of 8,500 tons.

The new cargo carrier has excellent economic performance and efficient loading and operation performance. Compared with the current cargo carriers of the same tonnage class and type, this type of cargo carrier saves about 40% of fuel consumption, reduces about 80% of NOx emissions, and significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions. It can be connected to shore power while berthing and parking to solve the power demand and it meets Tier III emission and EEDI Phase 2 requirements.

Since the signing of the contract, CSSC Guangxi Shipbuilding has maintained close communication with the shipowner and all parties around the starting construction of the first cargo carrier, and efficiently pushed forward the preliminary work such as design, drawing review as well as the production technology preparation work.

With the continuous in-depth understanding and high-quality communication and interaction between the shipowner and other parties to CSSC Guangxi Shipbuilding, MANISA confirmed the order for the construction of 2 two-way optional cargo carriers in January 2024 .
