On April 12, N1071, the first 16,000 TEU series methanol dual-fuel container ship constructed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co., Ltd. for COSCO Shipping Lines, entered the stage of keel laying in the dock.
The first ship of this series, N1071, is the first methanol dual-fuel large boxship in China, which is an important part of the green methanol industry chain built by COSCO Shipping Group to meet the demand of green shipping, and is a key project for the development of new green and low-carbon industry and the active promotion of low-carbon and zero-carbon fuel ships.
The container ship has an overall length of 367 meters, a beam of 51 meters with a maximum loading capacity of 16,136 TEUs. The ship meets the EEDI III energy efficiency index, which can reduce carbon emissions by about 8.9% of the corresponding total amount, and is 52.8% lower than the IMO carbon emission standard.
COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), together with relevant parties, has completed the corresponding design work of methanol dual-fuel retrofit within the shortest period of time, and solved the problems of methanol fuel bunkering, storage, supply and equipment.
This series of container ships are equipped with domestic WinGD world’s first set of methanol dual-fuel main engine, methanol dual-fuel generator, ALFALAVAL world’s first set of methanol dual-fuel boiler and also equipped with methanol fuel barge and supply system.
It is an important period for the global shipping industry to promote the transformation of green, low-carbon and intelligent ships. New energy and clean energy-powered ships account for 70% of COSCO Shipping Group’s new shipbuilding orders in 2023.
Compared to traditional energy ship fuels, methanol is NOx and sulfur free with low PM emissions. Compared with other new energy fuels, methanol power technology is simple, it is easy to store and use, low operation and maintenance costs, high security, price market fluctuations are smaller, etc. Particularly, the continuous establishment and improvement of the green methanol supply chain system makes it stand out. Green methanol fuel is an important way for the shipping industry to make a green transition.
