China’s largest liquid hydrogen carrier makes a spectacular debut

On March 13, 2024 Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) opened in Singapore, and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) made a wonderful debut for the first time in the exhibition.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co.,Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), made a wonderful appearance of its elf-developed 40,000 m3 and 20,000 m3 liquid hydrogen carriers, demonstrating the overall strength of the world’s largest shipbuilding group and its innovative vitality in leading the development of ship science and technology.

The liquid hydrogen carrier has an overall length of 210 meters, a beam of 32.20 meters, a depth of 20 meters, with a design draught of 7 meters and a design speed of 15 knots.

Equipped with 3 liquid cargo tanks, the liquid hydrogen carrier adopts double-layer vacuum-insulated IMO C-tank liquid cargo enclosure system, and vacuum-insulated double-wall pipes for cryogenic liquid phase piping system.

Also, it is equipped with a dual-fuel (hydrogen and diesel) power system with a hydrogen fuel cell and a fuel/hydrogen hybrid generator, with zero carbon emissions in gas mode.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has specially designed the gas detection and ventilation system for the physical characteristics of hydrogen, and fitted a special incineration unit for hydrogen to deal with the excess evaporated gas, which ensures the safety of the transportation and use of liquid hydrogen fuel.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has been deeply engaged in the LNG industry for 26 years, and has achieved a full range and coverage of LNG high-end products. The company is actively researching and developing new energy-saving and environmentally friendly ship types such as liquid hydrogen carriers, liquid ammonia carriers and carbon dioxide carriers, which will help the global shipping industry achieve the vision of zero carbon emission and promote the development of global clean energy industry.
