After China’s first domestically built large cruise ship “Adora Magic City”, Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) is once again involved in the construction of China’s second domestically large cruise ship. Recently, the background project of the cruise ship’s catering and cold storage area undertaken by Shanghai Installation Engineering Group officially started construction.
It is reported that China’s first domestically built large cruise ship “Adora Magic City” delivered on November 4, 2023, after eight years of research and development and five years of design and construction.
The naming and delivery of China’s first domestically built large cruise ship signified that China successfully won the pearl on the crown of the global shipbuilding industry again and made China the only country in the world currently constructing aircraft carriers, large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and large cruise ships simultaneously. It is a significant step for China’s transition from a large shipbuilding country to a shipbuilding power, and CSSC has become the fourth shipbuilding group globally to successfully design and build large cruise ships.
The Installation Group, Decoration Group and Research Institute, three subsidiaries of SCG were all involved in the construction of the “Adora Magic City” .They undertook the background works for the restaurant and cold storage areas, the electrical works for the public areas, as well as the construction of key typical areas such as the art promenade, the public lounge, the high ropes adventure area on deck, the topside of the beach club, etc. They also innovated and developed the equipment for boarding and lifting platforms for the outfitting cabins.
As scheduled, the large cruise ship will be docked in mid-April 2024 to start continuous loading, have first floating in early May 2025, out of the dock by the end of March 2026, start sea trials in June 2026, and be delivered by the end of 2026.
The second domestically cruise ship has been optimized in a series of ways on the basis of the first cruise ship of the same type. It has a gross tonnage of about 142,000 tons, an overall length of 341 meters, a beam of 37.2 meters, a design draft of 8.17 meters, a maximum draft of 8.4 meters, a maximum speed of 22.7 knots, and 2,144 staterooms. Compared with the first ship, it has an increase of 0.67 million tons in gross tonnage, an increase of 17.4 meters in overall length, and an increase of 19 staterooms.
The total construction time for the second domestically cruise ship is scheduled to be reduced by 20% compared to the first one Adora Magic City.
The background engineering of the first general section of catering and cold storage area of the second domestically large cruise ship undertaken by SCG has recently started, with a total of 36 general sections involved in the catering area. Summarizing the construction experience of the first cruise ship, SCG has basically completed the deepening design modeling and model balancing work at the beginning of 2024, and has completed the construction work of 5 segments.
