Figures for New Ship Orders of China-Korea in February 2024

According to the data released by Clarkson Research on March 6, the global new ship orders in February this year amounted to 3.41 million compensated gross tonnage(CGT) (100 ships), with compensated gross tonnage as the benchmark, up 18% compared with the same period last year (2.88 million compensated gross tonnage). Among them, the South Korean shipbuilding enterprises received new orders for 1.71 million CGT (28 ships), with a market share of 50% ranking first in the world; China’s shipbuilding enterprises received new orders for 1.41 million CGT (59 ships), with a market share of 41% of the world’s second.

In the first two months of 2024, China and South Korea shipbuilding enterprises score of 1:1, both sides are flat. In January, China’s shipbuilding enterprises has taken new orders for 1.36 million CGT (41 ships), with 53% of the market share ranked first in the world; South Korean shipbuilding enterprises has taken new orders for 970,000 CGT (32 ships), with 38% of the market share ranked second. In contrast, Japan’s shipbuilding enterprises in January this year, received a relatively dismal amount of orders, only 100,000 CGT (5 ships), market share of only 4%.

Datas show that in January-February this year, the global new ship orders totaled 6.83 million CGT (232 ships), up 8% year-on-year. During this period, the order quantity of China’s shipbuilding enterprises was 3.21 million CGT (119 ships), with a market share of about 47%, an increase of 29% over the same period last year; the order quantity of South Korean shipbuilding enterprises was 3.4 million CGT (69 ships), with a market share of 44%, an increase of 27% over the same period last year.

Based on the end of February, the global hand-held newbuilding orders amounted to 125.88 million CGT, a decrease of 130,000 CGT compared with the same period. Among them, China’s shipbuilding enterprises hand-held orders for 62.23 million CGT, market share of about 49%, an increase of 640,000 CGT, an increase of 6.74 million CGT; South Korea’s shipbuilding enterprises hand-held orders for 38.61 million CGT, market share of about 31%, a decrease of 550,000 CGT, an increase of 60,000 CGT.

At the end of February, the Clarkson Newbuilding Price Index stood at 181.45 points, up 11% year-on-year and 40% from February 2020, which continuing its upward trend.

By ship type, the newbuilding price of 174,000 m3 large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers was US$265 million, same as in January; the newbuilding price of very large crude carriers (VLCC) was US$128 million, same as in January; and the price of ultra-large container ships (22,000 TEU-24,000 TEU) was US$237 million, same as in January.
