Hudong-Zhonghua set off a construction boom of LNG carriers

Recently, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), set off a boom in the simultaneous construction of three ships for China’s largest LNG shipbuilding project.

It is reported that the first phase of the LNG project was inked in January 2022, with a contract value of CNY7.5 billion (about USD1.042 billion), and planed to build six 174,000 m3 LNG carriers.

The first LNG carrier was completed launching on July 14, 2023, and is currently undergoing the work of hull outer plate painting and equipment debugging. It is expected that in March 2024 it will proceed with sea trials and gas tests.

The second LNG carrier kicked off on June 28, 2023 and is currently in the dock-carrying phase.

The second LNG carrier is currently in the stage of segment processing, which draws on the experience of the construction of the first two units for its preliminary preparatory work.

The 174,000 m3 LNG carriers are tailor-made to meet the requirements of the project, featuring the latest design concepts, the best technology and equipment, the strongest environmental performance and the most forward-looking. It is 299 meters in overall length, 46.4 meters in beam, 26.25 meters in depth and has a speed of 19.5 knots, which is equipped with X-DF dual-fuel engines and the latest generation of double transom fin lines, and is fitted with GTT’s latest generation NO96 Super+ cargo containment system.

This ship type is characterized by low overall energy consumption, wide compatibility between ship and shore, and easy operation and maintenance, etc. Compared with the same ship type previously, its loading capacity has increased by 800 m3, reducing carbon emissions by more than 10 tons per day. Its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) meets the requirements of the fourth phase ahead of schedule, and its energy consumption index, environmental performance and reliability have all been up to the world’s top level.
