Recently, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) Co.,Ltd. successfully completed the first retrofitting project of energy-saving devices on the bow windshield of 20,954 TEU container ship.
“CMA CGM LOUIS BLERIOT” is a super-large container ship under CMA CGM, the main repair and modification works are the 5-year special inspection and the installation of windbreak structure at the bow of container ship.
The 20,954 TEU container ship has been equipped with desulphurization device and ballast water treatment system, making it a green and energy-saving ship. The retrofitting of energy-saving devices on the windshield will further reduce the carbon emissions.
This is the first time that COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) has entered into the field of retrofitting energy-saving devices for bow windshields. The device is a new design in the past two years, which can effectively reduce the wind resistance while traveling, and reduce carbon emission by reducing fuel consumption.
It is known that this is not the first time for CMA CGM to install windbreaks. As early as February 2023, the company equipped its ultra-large container ship “Marco Polo” with this energy-saving device.
The Marco Polo was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding in 2012. Measuring 396 meters long and 53.6 meters wide, with a capacity of 16,022 TEUs, it was the world’s largest container ship at that time.
Windbreaks can improve aerodynamic performance of ships, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and helps to lower the carbon emissions, according to Duffy.
It is understood that windbreak installations have been around since 2015. At that time, Japan’s MOL installed a bow windbreak on the 6,700 TEU MOL Marvel container ship for the first time. It was confirmed that at a speed of 17 knots, the MOL Marvel saved about 2% in average energy consumption with the installation of the windbreak.
