GTT Scoops Order for 8 Very Large LNG Carrier Tank Designs

French engineering company GTT has received an order from a Chinese shipyard for the tank design of eight new very large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

GTT will design the tanks for the eight LNG carriers, which will each offer five tanks with a total capacity of 271,000 m3.

The tanks will be fitted with the NO96 Super+ membrane containment system developed by GTT.

Delivery is scheduled between the second quarter of 2028 and the fourth quarter of 2029.

Although GTT has not yet disclosed the shipyard information, the order is likely to be placed by CSSC Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding based on the cargo hold capacity and delivery date of the new vessels.

At the end of 2023, QatarEnergy and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding formally finalized an agreement for the construction of eight 271,000 m3 Q-Max ultra-large LNG carriers, which are expected to be delivered between 2028 to 2029.

Meanwhile, the cargo tank capacity of GTT’s newly announced order matches that of the world’s largest LNG carrier released by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding on September 5, 2023, equipped with the NO96 Super+ membrane containment system in a 5-tank scheme, which increases the capacity by 57% compared to conventional 174,000 m3 large LNG carriers.
