On 8 February, the fourth 16,000 TEU container ship built by CSSC Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (CSI) for MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Group) was named and delivered. The new ship was named “MSC CARMELITA”.
Designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), MSC CARMELITA is supported by WinGD for the main engine and Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research institute (SMDERI) for the desulphurisation system. The 16,000 TEU container ship has an overall length of 366 metres, a beam of 51 metres, a depth of 30.2 metres, a design draught of 14.5 metres, and can carry up to 16,616 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers.
The container ship has achieved lower fuel consumption by optimising the line shape, propeller, main engine and adopting a series of energy-saving measures. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has reached the third stage standard, which meets the most stringent emission requirements in the world. Meanwhile, its large-capacity reefer container layout and system have been further improved, and the operating cost per container has been significantly reduced.
