Recently, Indian state-owned shipyard Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) announced a contract with a European customer for the construction of 1+1 hybrid Service Operating Vessels (SOV) for the offshore wind renewable energy market. The order is worth Rs. 5 billion (approximately RMB 433 million) and is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
Designed by Norwegian ship designer VARD AS, the SOV is dedicated to the offshore wind industry and can accommodate up to 54 technicians and crew.
The vessel has an in-built dynamic positioning system; a fully electric cycloidal propulsion system, a 3D motion compensated gangway system and a 3D crane; a DNV Clean Design and the latest Cyber Secure class notation. Clean Design” and the latest “Cyber Secure” class notation from DNV. The hybrid propulsion system is powered by 3 x 1,300 kWh diesel generators and a large lithium battery pack, providing significant emission reductions.
Cochin Shipyard, which specialises in the construction, repair upgrades and conversions of all types of vessels, is currently constructing two Commissioning Service Operating Vessels (CSOVs) for another European client. The order was announced in November 2022 at a cost of $440 million per vessel.
Last month (17 January), Cochin Shipyard inaugurated its new shipyard and international ship repair centre. As India’s largest ship repair facility, the shipyard previously had a maximum dock size of 255x43x9 metres, with two gantry cranes of 300 tonnes and 150 tonnes, and was capable of constructing ships of up to 110,000 deadweight tonnes.
