The cumulative production of South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries'(HHI) self-developed four-stroke medium-sized marine engine “HiMSEN” has exceeded 15,000 units. On Monday (29th January), HHI held a production ceremony to commemorate this record production.
The 15,000th engine, with a power of 4,320 kW, will be installed on MSC’s 16,000 TEU container ship, which is being built at a shipyard under the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group.
“Powerful Engine” is a four-stroke medium-sized engine developed by HHI in August 2000 with its own technology after more than 10 years of research. The first 4 units were completed in 2001, and the production has been increasing greatly year by year; the total production reached 5,000 units in February 2011, and 10,000 units in March 2016. HHI plans to produce 1,000 units in 2024, with 2,700 units on order at present.
Since 2011, HHI has been dedicated to the production of high-power engines in the medium-speed engine segment. The company currently exports products to more than 60 countries globally and is ranked No. 1 in the world with a 35 percent market share of marine medium-speed engines. In recent years, it has focused on developing environmentally friendly fuel engines, such as methanol and ammonia engines, in response to increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
The HD Hyundai Group is also committed to the engine after-sales service business through the establishment of a co-operation system between group companies. HD Hyundai Marine Solution aims to provide a one-stop after-sales solution for all ships equipped with HHI engines/high-power engines.
In addition, the HD Hyundai Group is promoting a ” Licensing Business” based on high-power engine technologies that are recognised in the global market, and has established overseas bases in the marine engine market.
The groundbreaking for the MAKEEN engine plant, a joint venture between HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) (HD KSOE) and Saudi Aramco Development Company (SADCO) and Saudi Industrial Investment Company (Dussur), took place in June 2023. This is the first time for HHI to produce self-developed medium-sized engines overseas. MAKEEN is the first licensing project for HHI’s marine engines, which means that the company has opened an overseas base in the marine engine field, and is of great significance.
