Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has held a naming ceremony for the HMM Garnet, a 13,000 TEU containership, at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries headquarters in Ulsan, Korea.
In June 2021, the company signed a formal contract to build 12 of its 13,000 TEU containers with Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which build six ships, respectively.
HMM Garnet is the first of the new ships. The 335-meter-long container was built to emphasise environmental sustainability and can function effectively at low speeds without compromising durability. The ship is equipped with cutting-edge energy-saving technologies, which help to lower pollution emissions and improve fuel economy. Additionally, it is LNG-ready, which makes it simple to switch to using LNG fuel in the future to reduce carbon emissions even further.
These ships are unique because they have smart ship solutions installed, allowing real-time operational data transmission to HMM’s Fleet Control Center. This guarantees a thorough understanding of the ships’ functional status and highlights HMM’s dedication to technical advancement.
Kim, Kyung Bae, President and CEO of HMM, said: “We expect our new ships to give us strong environmental credentials and to provide us with the capacity and flexibility in the face of growing competition in the global market.”
The new containership will reportedly be deployed on the East Coast 1 (EC1) route under THE Alliance’s product plan beginning in February, with port rotations in Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Yantian, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, and Singapore.
Upon delivery of all new vessels on order, HMM’s fleet is expected to reach 1 million TEU. Large containerships with more than 10,000 TEU will account for 80 per cent of the company’s total fleet, improving cost structure and operating efficiencies.
This month, HMM announced the launch of a new Supply Chain Carbon Calculator, which allows customers to enhance their carbon footprint visibility across the entire logistics journey.
