CMHI Haimen shipyard commences construction of the second 180,000 m3 LNG carrier

On January 10th, China Merchants Heavy Industries Haimen shipyard (CMHI Haimen shipyard) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project of 180,000 m3 LNG carrier No.2 vessel.

This project is the second 180,000 m3 LNG carrier to be built by CMHI Haimen shipyard for Celsius, and the first vessel of the series commenced construction in October last year.

The 180,000 m3 LNG carrier is jointly developed by Deltamarin under China Merchants Industry and CMHI Haimen shipyard, with independent intellectual property rights, it is a typical representative of the transformation and upgrading of China Merchants Industry to promote high-quality development.

It has an overall length of about 298.8 meters, a beam of 48 meters, a depth of 26.5 meters, a design draft of 11.5 meters, a service speed of 19.5 knots and an endurance of 22,000 nautical miles.

The liquid cargo tanks of the ship adopt GTT Mark III FLEX membrane technology. The four liquid cargo tanks of the ship have a total capacity of 180,000 m3, with a maximum loading rate of 99.4% and a cargo evaporation rate of less than 0.085%/day. It is not limited to water navigation and is compatible with the world’s mainstream large-scale LNG terminals.

Moreover, the LNG carrier is equipped with two 5-cylinder main engines, two 8-cylinder generators, two 6-cylinder generators and one 2.0t/h re-liquefaction unit. In extreme summer weather conditions, it meets the need to maximize the utilization of the re-liquefaction equipment and to maintain tank pressure with zero cargo loss.

The successive commencement of two LNG carriers means that CMHI Haimen shipyard has become the fourth shipyard in China to officially start the construction of large LNG carriers after Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Jiangnan shipyard and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC).

On December 30, 2022, China Merchants Industry and Celsius Tankers formally signed a contract for the construction of 4+2+2 180,000 m3 LNG carriers. On October 23, 2023, two options came into force and the shipowner added four more options. This brings the number of LNG carriers ordered by Celsius Tankers in China Merchants Industry to 12, with 6 units already in force.
