Beihai Shipyard Receives Orders for 7 Bulk Carriers of 2 Types

Recently, CSSC Qingdao Beihai shipyard Co., Ltd. together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC) once again signed a contract with Singapore Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Ltd.(EPS) for the construction of four 210,000 DWT Ammonia DF/DF Ready bulk carriers.

This bulk carrier is designed independently by CSDC, a design company under Beihai Shipyard. With an overall length of 300.00 meters, a beam of 50.00 meters, a depth of 25.20 meters, a structural draught of 18.40 meters, and a speed of 14.0 knots, the ship can meet the requirements of the third phase (Phase III) of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

At the same time, the ship meets the ammonia fuel pre-setting, and will be equipped with ammonia fuel main engine at a later stage, to ensure that ammonia fuel can be used in the future to realize the ship’s whole life cycle of “zero carbon” operation.

It is understood that the two parties first cooperated in September 2023 Beihai shipyard, together with CSTC and EPS, signed a contract for the construction of 3+3 210,000 DWT Ammonia DF/DF Ready bulk carriers in Singapore.

In November, the two parties signed another contract for 3+4 210,000 DWT Ammonia DF/DF Ready bulk carrier project. It is the successor of the three 210,000 DWT Ammonia DF/DF Ready bulk carrier project of the same type, which was contracted in September and came into effect.

The single vessel cost of the series is approximately US$80 million (approximately RMB 585 million). The first three newbuildings are scheduled for delivery in the third to fourth quarter of 2026, with an alternative order scheduled for delivery in the first to second quarter of 2027, which will be the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel 210,000 dwt bulk carriers.

Including the latest order, EPS’s order for this vessel type at Beihai Shipyard reaches 10 vessels.

In addition, Beihai shipyard announced that it has once again signed a contract for the construction of three 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel-powered bulk carriers with Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.(MOL)

The vessel is a new generation of “green” ship type independently developed and designed by CSDC, a design company under Beihai Shipyard. Through the comprehensive optimization of ship design, the ship has better fuel and gas economy, EEDI is about 44% lower than the baseline value, SOx emission is reduced by more than 90%, NOx emission is reduced by more than 20%. Under gas mode, the vessel can meet the requirements of two round-trip voyages on China-Australia route and one round-trip continuation capacity on China-Pakistan route.

It is understood that MOL announced on August 25, 2022 that it has ordered four 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel-powered bulk carriers from Beihai shipyard, scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026.

Since the contract came into effect, Beihai Shipyard has actively deployed the design, procurement, production preparation and other work of the project, and maintained close and good communication with the shipowner, which has successfully facilitated the signing of the three vessels into force. This order is conducive to the further consolidation and expansion of the Japanese market for Beihai Shipyard.

Back on December 9, 2023, MOL announced that it will build five new dual-fuel capesize bulk carriers to expand its fleet. In addition to the three vessels contracted by Beihai Shipyard, the other two will be ordered from Nihon Shipyard and built by Imabari Shipbuilding. All five new vessels will be delivered between 2026 and 2027.

Including the five new vessels, MOL will add 13 LNG-fueled capesize bulk carriers, the first of which has already begun operations in March 2023, the company said. LNG is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 25 %, sulfur oxide emissions by 100 %, and nitrogen oxide emissions by about 85 %, compared to conventional marine fuels.

It is worth mentioning that Beihai shipyard continues to focus on the large bulk carrier main construction ship type market, currently holding 42 NEWCASTLEMAX type bulk carriers, the market share ranks first in the world. Among them, the new energy green ship type hand-held orders accounted for more than 90%.
