ESL Shipping subsidiary AtoB@C Shipping has taken delivery of Electramar, the first vessel of twelve highly energy-efficient plug-in hybrid vessels being built at the Indian shipbuilder Chowgule shipyard for their account.
The vessel is the first in a series of 12 hybrid-electric bulk carriers, commencing construction in March 2022 for a June 2023 launch. The vessel will be 90 meters in length and 16 meters in width, with a deadweight of 5,400 tons, and will fly the Cyprus flag. The second vessel in the series, the Stellamar, was launched on October 1, 2023. All the 12 vessels are scheduled for delivery from the third quarter of 2023 to the second quarter of 2026.
The new hybrid ships can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to current vessels. Superior fuel efficiency is provided through shore power connections and large battery units, with the potential to minimize noise and emissions during port calls.
The vessel is optimized for a wide range of bulk and breakbulk products. Based on crew quarters and a bow bridge, these vessels have an uncovered deck and can carry more deck cargo and longer project cargoes than the existing fleet.
