Hanwha Ocean to design digital vessels with ABS

Hanwha Ocean to collaborate with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to validate digital shipbuilding technologies through 2026.

Hanwha Ocean has signed a Strategic Framework Agreement for Digital Transformation of Shipbuilding with ABS to cooperate on technology demonstration and verification of digital production technology, cybersecurity, autonomous operation, and smart ship solutions.

Digital shipbuilding refers to the implementation of all processes of ship production using virtual reality technology. It is an indispensable technology for management innovation and dramatic productivity improvement in the shipbuilding industry.

Based on this memorandum of understanding, the two companies will sequentially conduct joint research aimed at certifying digital technologies related to smart yards and smart ships developed by Hanwha Ocean.

First of all, Hanwha Ocean will acquire Product Design Assessment Certificate (PDA) and Manufacturing Assessment (MA) for the ship’s Draft Reading System based on AI image analysis that the company has already developed.

Later, through technical cooperation, the company plans to obtain ABS certifications for technologies such as remote inspection, ship cybersecurity, smart ship platform cybersecurity, and the safety and economic operation solution of its own smart ship solution, HS4.

“Acquiring the certification of ABS, which has conducted a lot of demonstration and verification work in the field of smart yards and smart ships, will ensure the reliability of our products,” said an official from Hanwha Ocean. “It is expected that we will occupy a more favorable position in the global autonomous ship market in the future.”
