HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Gains AiP for Innovative “Double Head Side Protector” to Enhance Container Ship Safety

Recently, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has received Approval-in-Principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR), Korea Classification Society (KR) and Liberia’s Flag State for the “lashing auxiliary cargo safety device” for container ships.

It is understood that the container ship require a “ lashing ” process. In order to improve the loading volume, container vessels in the cargo hold after loading containers, close the hatch cover, the deck above the container stack to be loaded. At this time, in order to prevent loading in the hatch cover above the container in the transportation process movement, the need to be fixed in the corresponding lashing bridge to ensure the safety and stability of the container.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries introduced that the lashing auxiliary cargo safety device developed by the company for container ships is called “Double Head Side Protector”, which is a fixing device installed on the sides of the upper and lower pairs of containers on the left and right sides of the ship. The device is fixed to the lashing bridge separately from the existing lashing device, aiming to further strengthen the onboard containers and prevent the containers from tipping over even in severe sea conditions.

In addition, the device is made of a molten structure of high-strength composite materials and steel, and can withstand the huge load of multiple stacked containers. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to verify its performance through prototype design and actual testing.

As early as 2022, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has launched a “lashing free” container ship and obtained design approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian flag state. It is said that this is the world’s first new concept container ship that does not require container fixing operations.

Hyundai Heavy Industries developed the “Lashing Free” container ship with an innovative device called “Portable Bench (SkyBenchV2)”. This device is capable of carrying the load of above-deck container stacking and transferring it to the hull, and above-deck containers are fixed by the cell guide extending from the cargo hold without lashing, thus replacing the lashing bridge.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said, “The development of the doubl head side protection device is a new concept technology through which the company plans to enhance its competitiveness in the highly competitive container ship market by improving the safety of cargo loaded on container ships that use the lashing process.”
