SMDERI Achieves Milestone in Domestic LNG Tech with Advanced Re-liquefaction Unit

On April 18, Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research institute (SMDERI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, successfully held the ship inspection witnessing ceremony of MR LNG re-liquefaction unit and a technical exchange meeting in Hudong Changxing Island Onshore Cryogenic Center.

Witnessed by representatives from China Classification Society (CCS), Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Jiangnan Shipyard, DSIC, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, China Merchants Heavy Industry, PetroChina, Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI), Institute of Chemistry and Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc., SMDERI’s independently developed 1.5t/h MR LNG re-liquefaction unit successfully passed the product inspection of CCS.

The specific power consumption of the device under rated working condition is 0.667 kWh/kg, which reaches the advanced level of similar products in the world. It fully demonstrates the technical advantage of the product’s low energy consumption and can provide a more low-carbon, efficient and green solution for LNG vessels.

During the meeting, SMDERI shared the development progress and test verification results of MR LNG re-liquefaction unit. Hudong-Zhonghua introduced the construction and operation of the onshore cryogenic test center. The participating experts carried out in-depth technical exchanges around the re-liquefaction unit, gave full affirmation to the unit, and expressed their confidence in the application of the unit on board.

As the core cryogenic equipment of LNG carriers and bunkering vessels, LNG re-liquefaction unit has been monopolized by foreign countries for a long time. SMDERI, together with the mixed working fluid refrigeration technology team of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successively conquered the localization of 1t/h and 1.5t/h re-liquefaction units, forming the supply capacity of a series of specifications of LNG re-liquefaction units. This landmark achievement has laid a solid foundation for the promotion and application of domestic MR LNG re-liquefaction units on board, and has also provided effective support for promoting the localization process of core equipment in my country’s offshore LNG industry chain.
