Beihai Shipbuilding Hands Over MOL’s First 210,000 DWT LNG Dual-Fuel Smart Bulk Carrier

On April 16, CSSC Beihai Shipbuilding together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. (CSTC) held a naming and delivery ceremony for the first 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier “RURI OCEAN” built for Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL). The vessel is about to embark on its first green voyage across the Pacific.

As China’s first green large bulk carrier “smart” built in MOL’s 100 years of shipping history, “RURI OCEAN” uses LNG dual fuel and is equipped with a “gas-oil” dual fuel switching system.

When using LNG fuel, the vessel’s NOx emissions can be reduced by more than 25%, CO emissions can be reduced by more than 30%, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by about 20%, and the measured EEDI of the vessel is lower than the baseline value of 45.10%, which meets the requirements of the EEDI Phase III emissions. The fuel economy is improved by more than 15% compared with traditional ship types.

In August 2022, MOL and Beihai Shipbuilding signed the first contract for four 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026. The order starts a new chapter for MOL to build 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel large bulk carriers in China, and is also the first time for Beihai Shipbuilding to enter the Japanese market.

At present, the two parties have signed contracts for several 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers, and subsequent vessels, including: in January 2024, a contract for the construction of three 210,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers was signed, which will be delivered from 2026 to 2027; In December 2024, MOL again commissioned Beihai Shipbuilding to build four 210,000 DWT ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers, which will be delivered from 2027 to 2028.
