BYD’s 8-PCTC Fleet Nears Completion for EV Market Lead

On April 2, BYD officially announced that the PCTC (pure car and track carrier) “BYD Xi’an” was officially launched. At the same time, the world’s largest PCTC “BYD Shenzhen” is about to make its maiden voyage.

According to reports, “BYD Shenzhen” PCTC has a total length of 219.9 meters, a beam of 37.7 meters, a designed draft of 9 meters, a designed speed of 18.5 knots and it can carry 9,200 vehicles.

The PCTC adopts LNG dual-fuel clean power and various energy-saving measures such as energy-saving devices and drag-reducing antifouling coatings. Also, it is the first time to install and apply BYD box-type battery pack and shaft generator with green environmental protection, intelligent and efficient and other technical advantages, which is the largest and most environmentally friendly automobile ro-ro vessel in the world.

The “BYD Xi’an” is the sixth car carrier BYD will receive.

On January 10, 2024, BYD’s first 7,000 CEU PCTC “EXPLORER NO.1” was delivered at Yantai Port in Shandong. The vessel was built by CIMC Raffles for Zodiac Maritime and leased to BYD by the shipowner. It is BYD’s first PCTC.

On November 29, 2024, BYD’s second PCTC “BYD Changzhou”, also built by CIMC Raffles, set sail from Yantai, Shandong, and headed for Western Europe.

On January 7, 2025, the first 7,000 CEU dual-fuel PCTC “BYD Hefei” built by CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International for BYD was named and delivered. This is the first PCTC ordered by BYD as a ship owner.

On January 15, 2025, BYD’s 9,200 CEU LNG dual-fuel PCTC “BYD Shenzhen”, built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing), launched in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, and will be BYD’s fourth PCTC.

In March 2025, BYD’s fifth PCTC “BYD Changsha”, built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Haimen shipyard (CMHI Haimen shipyard), was launched and is expected to be delivered in May, which is also BYD’s second 9200 CEU PCTC.

On April 2, 2025, the BYD Xi’an, also built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing), was launched.

It is reported that BYD plans to successively receive eight large PCTCs around 2025 to further improve the control and flexibility of supply chain management. This forward-looking layout will not only help BYD expand its market share globally, but will also further consolidate its leading position in the field of new energy vehicles.
