Wuhan TEMO Welding Consumables Develops Breakthrough High-Manganese Cryogenic Welding Materials, Boosting Cost Efficiency

Recently, Wuhan TEMO Welding Consumables Co.,Ltd (WHTM), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has successfully developed a series of high-manganese low-temperature steel welding materials, injecting new impetus into the company’s high-quality development.

In recent years, with the implementation of the marine strategy and new energy strategy, the demand for steel materials used for ultra-low temperature storage and transportation containers such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) has gradually increased. At present, ultra-low temperature storage and transportation containers are generally made of 9Ni steel, and the corresponding welding material is nickel-based welding wire, which has a nickel content of more than 50%. The price is expensive, resulting in an increase in enterprise costs.

Currently, high manganese low-temperature steel has attracted extensive attention as a cutting-edge new low-temperature material. High manganese low-temperature steel (22-26% Mn content) has the same physical metallurgical characteristics as 9Ni steel, and has the advantages of high performance and low cost. It is a highly competitive first choice material to replace 9Ni steel as steel for LNG storage tanks.

At present, the research and development of high manganese and low-temperature steel in China is still in its infancy. Its supporting welding materials, as a key link in product application, will directly determine whether ultra-low temperature high manganese steel can be promoted and used.

WHTM is the only modern welding material enterprise under CSSC that integrates production, learning and research. The company’s scientific research team has successfully developed solid welding wire for high-manganese low-temperature steel for LNG storage tanks, and has now formed a series of products.

The product’s cladding metal has excellent mechanical properties such as tensile strength and -196℃ low-temperature impact, and has good compatibility with austenitic high-manganese low-temperature steel. It can be used for laser arc hybrid welding, which not only solves the problem of substandard impact toughness in ultra-low temperature environments, but also greatly reduces production costs, fills the gap in the domestic market, and has good economic benefit prospects.

WHTM welding with the capacity to manufacture the full range of welding consumables like Electrodes, Mig wires, Flux-cored wires, Submerged arc wires and Flux etc, annual capacity is about 250,000 tons. Products are approved by nine ship classification societies such as CCS, LR, ABS, GL, DNV, NK, BV, KR, RINA ,besides those are certified by CE, DB, TUV.
