Two Vessels Collide Near Ningbo: 1 Dead, 3 Hospitalized as One Vessel Sinks

According to the official blog of Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration, at around 2:50 a.m. on March 29, 2025, the “Ningyuan Beilun” collided with the “Jianghai Zhida 66” in the waters Ningbo’s Yangxiaomao Island, causing the “Jianghai Zhida 66” to sink. As of 6:50 a.m., all 13 people who fell into the water were rescued, one of whom had no vital signs, three had been sent to the hospital for treatment, and the remaining nine were safe. The “Ningyuan Beilun” was safe.

The follow-up of the accident is progressing.

It is worth noting that one of the vessels involved in the collision, the Ningyuan Beilun, belongs to the Ningbo Ocean Shipping Fleet and is an open top container vessel that was officially delivered at Taizhou Jianxing Heavy Industry on February 27 this year. The delivery of the vessel marks that the capacity of Ningbo Ocean Shipping’s own container vessels has exceeded 50,000 TEUs, and the fleet size has reached a new level.

The 1000TEU open container vessel is a special vessel customized by Ningbo Ocean Shipping to meet the needs of domestic feeder business expansion and to help Ningbo Zhoushan Port further strengthen its core hub advantage. There are 8 vessels in this series, with a length of 136.1 meters, a breadth of 25 meters, an average number of TEUs of 1058 TEUs, a maximum deadweight of 15,000 tons, and a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles.

Compared with the existing container vessels of the same tonnage and type in the market, this 1000 TEU open top container vessel has higher transportation efficiency, larger loading capacity and better energy-saving effect, which will further enhance Ningbo Ocean Shipping’s competitiveness in the market and customer service capability.

The “Jianghai Zhida 66” vessel that sank in this accident is a 14,000 DWT river-sea direct bulk carrier for specific routes. It was built by Daishan Zhakou Shipyard, owned by Zhoushan Hongtong Shipping Development Co., Ltd., and delivered for operation in May 2023.
