On March 28, Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC), signed a contract for the construction of a 70,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel with COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers in Guangzhou, China.
Li Jichun, Chief Accountant of COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, Zhou Mushun, Chief Engineer of GSI, Zhang Yan, General Manager of Beijing CSTC, and Lu Xinwei, Deputy General Manager of the Third Department of Ship and Marine Business of CSTC, jointly signed the vessel construction contract.
As a global leader in semi-submersible vessel transportation, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers has been engaged in this market segment for more than 30 years.
GSI is the first domestic shipbuilder with the ability to build advanced semi-submersible vessels. Over the past 20 years of cooperation, the two parties have delivered a total of eight semi-submersible vessels ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 tons. Not only has it successfully broken through the foreign technology blockade, but it has also promoted China to become a comprehensive leader in the design, construction and operation of semi-submersible vessels in the world.
On December 28, 2023, GSI delivered the 65,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel “Xiangtaikou”. The vessel is equipped with advanced power positioning system, intelligent ship system and SCR exhaust gas treatment system. It has both precise transportation and intelligent environmental protection functions. It is a new generation of ship type after the GSI semi-submersible vessel series has been updated and iterated, representing the development direction of advanced semi-submersible vessels.
GSI delivered the 80,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel “Xin Yaohua” in 2022, the second largest semi-submersible vessel built in China at that time.
GSI has delivered six semi-submersible vessels from 2002 to 2021. The most well-known of these is the 50,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel “Xiang’ankou” delivered in 2021. It is the first semi-submersible vessel built in China and equipped with a ship intelligent system. Compared with previous 50,000 DWT semi-submersible vessels, it has better improvements in environmental protection, stability, automation, maneuverability, energy saving and loading performance, which will promote China’s semi-submersible vessel manufacturing to move towards intelligence.
