Zhejiang’s Shipbuilding Industry Sees Growth for 4th Straight Year in 2024

According to zhejiang daily news, the Economy and Information Technology Department of zhejiang province was informed that in 2024, zhejiang three major shipbuilding indicators for four consecutive years to achieve double-digit growth: completed ships 5,658,000 dwt, an increase of 35.9% compared to the previous year; received orders for 11,691,000 dwt of new ships, an increase of 57.5% compared to the previous year; hand-held orders of 18,196,000 dwt, an increase of 59.7% compared to the previous year. The three major shipbuilding indicators accounted for 11.7%, 10.3% and 8.7% of the national share respectively.

In recent years, the high-quality development of Zhejiang shipbuilding industry continues to realize new breakthroughs. In 2024, the total output value of the shipbuilding industry amounted to RMB 61.49 billion (about US$8.47 billion), an increase of 23.6% over the previous year.

Looking at the subsectors, shipbuilding realized output value of RMB 31.09 billion (about US$4.28 billion), an increase of 30% over the previous year; ship repair realized output value of RMB 18.75 billion (about US$2.58 billion), an increase of 15.4% over the previous year, ranked first in China; the output value of ship supporting export has been growing steadily for 6 consecutive years; the output value of offshore equipment has been doubled for 3 consecutive years, with an increase of 119.2% over the previous year.

From the regional development point of view, Zhoushan City, as the main shipbuilding area in Zhejiang Province, contributed 67% of the province’s main shipbuilding indicators; the volume of new orders received by shipbuilders in Taizhou City and Ningbo City hit a record high since 2012, leading the growth rate of Zhejiang Province.

Last year, the core and coordinated areas of Zhejiang’s high-end shipbuilding and offshore equipment industry clusters contributed more than 81% to the province’s main economic indicators. The two core areas of Putuo and Dinghai contributed 71.3%. In addition, through the implementation of the “chain leader system” and the enterprise gradient cultivation system, Zhejiang has formed a fleet of “1 billion-level, 2 billion-level, and 15 billion-level” shipbuilding companies.

Last year, zhejiang’s high-end ships and offshore equipment industry cluster core area, synergistic area of the province’s main economic indicators of the ship’s contribution rate of more than 81%. Among them, Putuo District and Dinghai District contribution accounted for 71.3%.

At present, Zhejiang has received new orders for 13 of the world’s 18 major ship types, and the order structure has become more diversified. Among them, the new ship orders for the three major mainstream ship types, bulk carriers, container ships, and oil tankers, accounted for 36.1%, 30.2%, and 27.6% of Zhejiang’s total new orders.

It is understood that Zhejiang Province is forming unique competitive advantages in emerging markets such as LNG bunkering transport ships and pure electric high-speed passenger ships. The number of new green ship orders received throughout the year increased by 71% year-on-year, accounting for 24% of the total new orders, and maintained growth for three consecutive years.
