Terntank names two 15,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel ready chemical tankers

On March 21, China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng held a naming ceremony for two 15,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel ready chemical tankers, “TERN VIK” and “TERN LAND,” built for shipowner Terntank.

The first cooperation with Terntank is also the beginning of China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng’s opening of the Swedish DONSO Island market. Its achievements in long-term reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions explain the practical path of green shipping. With the future operation of “TERN VIK” and “TERN LAND”, the cooperation between the two parties will be further expanded to the field of methanol-powered ships. The two parties will work together to accelerate the process of zero-carbonization of ships and contribute the “China solution” to the global shipping industry’s carbon neutrality goal.

There are 11 15,000DWT dual-fuel chemical tankers, including 6 first-generation LNG dual-fuel propulsion system ships, which were delivered from 2014 to 2020. With the “world’s first two-stroke dual-fuel power technology” and “direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator technology”, the first-generation ship won the title of the World Ship of the Year 2016 selected by the internationally renowned ship magazine “Maritime Reporter & Engineering News”. They also received the IGS (International Green Shipping) Award for Outstanding Contribution to Green Shipping.

There are a total of 5 ships of the second-generation type, equipped with a sail-assisted propulsion system and a methanol dual-fuel-ready engine. In the future, they will be able to use Marine Gas Oil (MGO), biofuels, and methanol as fuels. At the same time, they are also integrated with a Hybrid power system and shore power technology. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) of the second-generation ship type is 40% lower than the standards of the third phase in 2025. The second-generation ship type won the “Next Generation Ship” award at the Nor-Shipping 2023.
