On March 20, HD Hyundai Maipo delivered the first hybrid ro-ro vessel “Chaumin” to Luxembourg offshore transportation company CLdN RoRo. The vessel is the first of two 8,000 CEU hybrid ro-ro vessels to be signed in 2022.
The Chaumin is 234 meters long and is equipped with two conventional main engines and two large shaft generators of 6 MW each, which can be used for power generation or electric propulsion. In all-electric mode, the vessel can reach a cruising speed of 16-17 knots.
The vessel also features other environmentally friendly technologies, such as Elomatic’s patented Elogrid energy-saving device, designed to maximize side thrust for better maneuverability.
This solution is expected to reduce additional drag, lower fuel consumption, minimize noise and vibration throughout the vessel, and reduce the environmental impact of offshore operations. In addition, Avicus’ HiNAS SVM and HiNAS Navigation navigation aids have been installed on board.
The new vessels are NOx TIER III compliant and are expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by a further 40% compared to the largest vessels currently operated by CLdN.
