Tsakos Secures $2 Billion Charter Deal with Petrobras for Nine Suezmax Shuttle Tankers

Greek shipowner Tsakos Energy Navigation has confirmed that it has entered into a long-term charter agreement with Petrobras’ logistics subsidiary Transpetro for nine Suezmax shuttle tankers.

Under the contract, each vessel will be chartered for a period of 15 years, and the nine vessels are expected to generate revenues of approximately $2 billion for Tsakos.Transpetro will charter the vessels as bareboat charterer and will assume all operational and technical costs associated with the operation of the vessels.

Just a few days ago, Tsakos has signed a shipbuilding contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for 9 shuttle tankers, with a total order value of about $1.33 billion and a single cost of about $148 million. The first two vessels will be delivered in 2027 and the remaining seven in 2028.

A Tsakos associate said, “Counting the nine new vessels that have just been contracted, as well as the three that are currently under construction and the four that have already been launched, the company will be one of the largest operators of Suezmax DP2 shuttle tankers in the world.”

The official website shows that Tsakos Energy Navigation, founded in 1993, is a leading provider of international maritime crude oil and petroleum products transportation services. With a diversified fleet of 83 vessels including crude oil tankers, product tankers and LNG carriers, the company has a strong presence in the global shipping industry.
