On March 15, a worker at Japan’s Oshima Shipyard fell to his death from a height of 4 meters while preparing for welding operations.
Before 11 a.m. that day, a male worker in his 40s was found bleeding from his head and lying on the ground while doing surveying work at the Oshima Shipyard in Oshima Town, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The worker was rushed to a city hospital for emergency treatment. At that time, he was already in a coma and seriously injured.
The worker was pronounced dead at around 3:30 a.m. on March 16.
According to the police investigation, at the time of the incident, the worker was taking measurements in preparation for welding operations on a work platform approximately 4 meters high. Although he was wearing safety equipment, however, it appeared that he had not fastened his safety belt to the fall arrest harness.
The police initially believed that the worker may have fallen accidentally due to negligence during the operation. At present, the specific cause of the accident is still under further investigation.
Established in 1973, Oshima Shipyard is the third largest shipbuilding company in Japan, focusing on bulk carriers of 30,000 to 100,000 tons, with a market share of about 25% in the Japanese bulk carrier market, and has two production bases, the Oshima Plant (head office) and the Kayaki Plant.
