China’s Largest Shipbuilding Base Reaches New Milestone

Recently, the dock gate of the No. 1 dock project at CSSC Changxing Phase II Base, undertaken by CSSC Ninth Design & Research Institute(CSSC NDRI) as the lead of the EPC consortium, was successfully closed, marking the completion of the main structure of the dock entrance and signifying that the overall dock construction has entered its final stage.

The project is located within the CSSC Changxing Phase II Base, the largest, most advanced, and internationally competitive shipbuilding base in China. It serves as a foundational project for the major construction initiatives of the National Development and Reform Commission and a key municipal project in Shanghai.

Upon completion, the project will further advance the development of Changxing Island in Shanghai into a “trillion-yuan” world-class marine equipment island, creating a world-leading, all-element industrial base. It will also become a new milestone and highlight for technological innovation and transformative development in China’s shipbuilding industry.

As a mega-scale hydraulic engineering project, the dock gate plays a critical role in facilitating ship access, blocking water flow, and controlling the entire dock. Its installation and closure represent a pivotal milestone in the dock construction process.

Prior to the gate closure, the project team had to complete a series of complex tasks, including dredging the dock entrance, dismantling the foundation pit support system, and underwater cutting and removal of the retaining steel sheet piles. To overcome these challenges, the project department organized a joint specialized task force with the construction team to study, discuss, and finalize a detailed implementation plan.

Currently, various tasks for the No. 1 dock project at CSSC Changxing Phase II Base, including the construction of the dock floor, the assembly platform, and the installation of equipment and pipelines in the pump house, are progressing smoothly and advancing in accordance with the overall plan.

The Changxing Shipbuilding Base Phase II project, as the overall relocation project of Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, is located along the southern coast of Changxing Island in Shanghai. The total construction area spans 431.8 hectares, with a planned investment of 18 billion yuan. The first phase covers an area of 214.6 hectares, with a planned investment of 8 billion yuan. The construction project mainly includes R&D and design buildings, a hull assembly workshop, a curved block welding workshop, an outfitting module center, a coating workshop, No. 1 indoor dock, No. 2 open dock, a harbor basin, and outfitting docks. The planned construction area is 460,000 square meters, aiming to achieve an annual production capacity of building 6 special vessels.
