China’s first ice-strengthened, purely electric tugboat was kicked off construction

On March 7, the construction of China’s first 4,000-horsepower ice-strengthened pure electric tugboat, commissioned by Shandong Bohai Bay Port Ferry Co. and built by Lianyungang Port Group Port Tug Company, officially commenced in Lianyungang.

The pure electric tugboat under construction has introduced an “ice-strengthened” hull structure for the first time, tailored to the long ice periods and complex sea conditions of Bohai Bay during winter, thereby expanding the application scenarios for pure electric tugboats. Additionally, as a digitally intelligent tugboat, the vessel is equipped with a digital twin system, an intelligent ship management platform, and a digital environmental monitoring platform, empowering safe navigation for digitalized ports.

It is reported that the vessel has an overall design length of 38.0 meters, a beam of 10.5 meters, and a depth of 4.7 meters. It is equipped with a battery capacity of no less than 5,800 kWh, utilizes DC charging technology with a maximum charging power of 2,000 kW, and powers all onboard equipment through a DC distribution system.

Designed with a speed of ≥13.0 knots and a bollard pull of ≥48 tons, it has also obtained additional notations such as “Intelligent Engine Room i-Ship (M)”, “Intelligent Energy Efficiency Management i-Ship (E)”, “Intelligent Integrated Platform i-Ship (I)”, and B3-level ice-strengthened classification.

Currently, there are five pure electric tugboats under construction at the Lianyungang Pure Electric Tugboat Industrial Demonstration Base, covering various stages such as delivery and testing, equipment installation, and design drafting, forming a highly efficient and collaborative production system.
