HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Surpasses 200 Million Horsepower Milestone, Pioneering Next-Generation Eco-Fuel Engines

Since 1989, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has topped the global large engine market share for 36 consecutive years. Especially from 2022, its market share is as high as 36%, showing strong competitiveness.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been able to maintain a long-term leadership position in the global large engine market due to its differentiated technological strength and continuous investment in innovation. The company has set a number of records, including successfully building the world’s first electronically controlled large engine in 2001 and the world’s largest 108,920 horsepower class engine in 2007.

In addition, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is leading the market for eco-friendly engines, preparing for the era of carbon neutrality. In 2012, the company developed the world’s first dual-fuel engine package, and in 2015, it successfully manufactured the first large-scale methanol-fueled engine. The company has also achieved the production of the world’s first very large methanol engine. Among the large engine orders received by the company, over 60% are for eco-friendly engines powered by LNG, LPG, methanol, and ethane.

In December 2022, the company successfully validated the LNG-hydrogen hybrid engine and accelerated the development of hydrogen fuel engine. Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has demonstrated strong technological capabilities in the field of ammonia-fueled engines and other next-generation fuel engines, providing significant support for the low-carbon transition of the global shipping industry.

In addition to its dominant position in the large engine market, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also holds the top position in the marine medium-sized engine (4-Stroke) sector with a global market share exceeding 30%. This achievement further solidifies its comprehensive leadership in the marine engine field and demonstrates its all-around technological capabilities in power systems.

In March 2023, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a ceremony at its Ulsan headquarters’ engine assembly plant to commemorate the surpassing of 200 million horsepower in cumulative production of large engines. At the ceremony, the company celebrated its cumulative production of large engines reaching 266,277 million horsepower by launching a 74,720 horsepower class marine large engine (8G95ME-LGIM).

This milestone achievement is the result of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ relentless efforts over 44 years since producing its first large engine in 1979. The cumulative production of 200 million horsepower is equivalent to the total output power of approximately 1.25 million mid-sized Sonata-class cars, fully demonstrating the company’s large-scale production capabilities in the engine sector.

It is worth mentioning that the engine that realizes 200 million horsepower is a much-anticipated next-generation eco-fuel engine with the option of using methanol and diesel as fuel (Dual-Fuel) engine. This engine not only reflects HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ leadership in environmental technology, but also provides an important solution for the sustainable development of the global shipping industry.
