On March 3rd, the world’s first Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit equipped with an onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system, the “AGOGO FPSO,” successfully set sail from Pier 7 of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai). Assisted by one main tugboat and six auxiliary tugboats, the non-self-propelled FPSO slowly departed from the quay, embarking on its new journey.
The AGOGO FPSO, as the world’s first FPSO equipped with post-combustion carbon capture capabilities, undoubtedly represents a significant advancement. By capturing carbon dioxide from the exhaust gases of the onboard gas turbines, this FPSO is expected to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, reaching approximately 27%. The application of this technology lays a solid foundation for the concept of achieving a zero-carbon emission FPSO.
In addition, the AGOGO FPSO integrates a range of new technologies such as electrification, automation and digitalization systems, combined cycle power systems, seawater turbine generators, steam generators, etc., which have been incorporated to not only improve operational efficiency, but also to further reduce overall carbon emissions.
COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) has made great efforts in the second stage integration work of AGOGO FPSO. During the period, it overcame all kinds of challenges and completed complex projects such as lifting of 10 topside modules with a total weight of more than 15,000 tons and laying of more than 1 million meters of cables with solid and effective work. In the end, the project completed all the conversion works one month earlier than the original plan, creating a new record for the conversion cycle of the same type of FPSO in the world.
The successful sailing of AGOGO FPSO marks another important achievement of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) in the field of green, low-carbon and intelligent ship and offshore engineering repair and conversion. The successful delivery of this project not only helps to promote the construction of the world-class marine equipment island in Changxing Island, Shanghai, but also contributes to the realization of the dream of a strong marine nation.
It is worth mentioning that the AGOGO FPSO is expected to be officially commissioned in September 2025 at West Hub in Block 15/06 in Angola, Africa. At that time, it will bring new vitality into the global energy market with a production capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.6 million barrels of oil storage.
