On February 26, Samsung Heavy Industries held a launching ceremony for the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit “PFLNG TIGA”. The ceremony was attended by Petronas and JGC.
Samsung Heavy Industries undertook “PFLNG TIGA” from Petronas in December 2022 with a contract value of 1.96 trillion won. The FLNG measures 281 meters in length, 64 meters in width, and 32 meters in depth, with a launching weight of 50,000 tons.
“PFLNG TIGA” commenced construction in January 2023. According to the plan, it will be scheduled to enter into full production in May 2027 off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia, with an expected annual production of 2.1 million tons of natural gas.
After launching, “PFLNG TIGA” will carry out a series of subsequent works, including the internal construction of the hull and the fabrication and installation of the LNG tanks, the installation of the topside modules, as well as the coating and insulation work. Among them, the most central work is the installation of the 40,000-ton topside module.
Samsung Heavy Industries will work with Japan’s JGC to build 11 modules of 2,000-7,000 tons in size and complete the installation with the help of a 9,000-ton offshore crane, with plans to have the facility set sail in February 2027.
Samsung Heavy Industries has undertaken 5 out of 9 FLNG projects in the world, occupying more than 50% market share, and “PFLNG TIGA” is expected to become a new benchmark in the field of offshore engineering, said Samsung Heavy Industries.
