Shanghai Port Leads with Pioneering LNG and Green Methanol Bunkering Services

Recently, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel “Haigang Weilai” conducted a simultaneous ship-to-ship bunkering operation, supplying 3,276 cubic meters of LNG to the large container liner “CMA CGM Greenland” during its loading and unloading operations at the Shengdong Terminal of Yangshan Port in Shanghai.

Shanghai Port is the first port in China and the third in the world to offer bonded LNG bunkering services and the first in China to provide green methanol fuel ship-to-ship simultaneous bunkering services. In January of this year, Shanghai Port completed LNG bunkering for 11 vessels, with a total bunkering volume of 65,000 cubic meters, representing a year-on-year increase of 138%. The port also bunkered methanol fuel for 3 vessels, with a total bunkering volume of 9,992 tons, including 4,000 tons of methanol fuel for the “Maersk Halifax,” setting a new record for the highest single bunkering volume of methanol fuel at Shanghai Port.

Since successfully completing China’s first simultaneous LNG bunkering operation for vessels in March 2022, the bonded LNG bunkering business of Shanghai Port Energy for vessels has developed rapidly. In 2024, Shanghai Port completed LNG bunkering for international shipping vessels totaling 462,000 cubic meters, representing a year-on-year increase of 75%. The bunkering areas have expanded from Yangshan Port to the entire Shanghai Port, with increasing capacity and scale. Additionally, Shanghai Port completed China’s first green methanol ship-to-ship simultaneous bunkering operation, further enhancing the level of high-end maritime services.
