Ocean Network Express Named its First Owned Container Ship

On February 14th, Ocean Network Express (ONE) announced the naming of its first owned and operated newbuilding as “ONE Sparkle”, marking an important milestone in the company’s eight-year history.

The ship is ONE’s first owned newbuilding, which was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. “ONE Sparkle” is a 13,800 TEU container ship, classed by ABS and flying the Singapore flag. Upon delivery, “ONE Sparkle” will be managed by OneSea Solutions, a ship management company jointly owned by ONE and Seaspan.

“ONE Sparkle” is the first of 20 ammonia/methanol ready large container ships ordered by the company from Nippon Shipbuilding (10) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (10), which were ordered in 2022 and 2023 and will be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

“ONE Sparkle” uses conventional fuels and adopts an alternative fuel-ready design, which can be converted to methanol and ammonia fuel in the future; its hull design has been optimized to improve energy efficiency; it also uses a new generation of energy-saving devices and integrates smart technology; in addition, the ship is also equipped with shore power function.

ONE stated that the delivery of the new ships will demonstrate the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices and strengthen ONE’s competitive position in the container sector.

It is reported that in July last year, ONE ordered 10 13,000TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Jiangnan Shipbuilding, five at each of the two shipyards. Together with the order for 12 ships of the same type officially confirmed on January 17, 2024, ONE has placed orders for a total of 22 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Jiangnan Shipyard, with the two shipyards constructing 11 ships each.
