CCS greenlights SMDERI’s first ammonia-fueled medium speed engine

Recently, China Classification Society (CCS) formally issued a type approval certificate of 270mm cylinder high-power marine ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engine to Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research institute (SMDERI), marking another key breakthrough for China in the field of clean energy power for marine use.

This engine is based on the first intelligent medium-speed diesel engine developed by SMDERI in China. It incorporates a completely new architecture, including a self-developed ammonia fuel injection system, an electronically controlled common rail system, and an electronic management system. By overcoming key technologies such as efficient, clean, stable, and reliable combustion organization, it achieves an outstanding performance with an ammonia fuel substitution rate exceeding 85%. This fully demonstrates China’s independent innovation capabilities in the field of marine alternative fuel engines.

In order to ensure the rigor and authority of the certification work, CCS set up a technical evaluation team for the type approval test, which witnessed the safety test, function test, load test and survey of the ammonia-fueled engine in its entirety. Also, CCS conducted comprehensive verification of the safety, operability, reliability and stability of the engine, confirming that all test items had been completed and fully complied with the relevant requirements of CCS specifications.
