Samsung Heavy Industries has successfully won the first order for LNG carriers in 2025.
On January 20, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had received an order for an LNG carrier from an Oceania region shipping company for 379.6 billion won (about $261 million), with delivery expected in June 2027.
Samsung Heavy Industries did not release the ship’s specifications, but the shipbuilder has built LNG carriers with a capacity of 174,000 m³ in recent years, and expects the same for the new vessel.
Samsung Heavy Industries said, “This year, we plan to continue to take orders for environmentally friendly vessels such as LNG carriers and ammonia carriers as well as high-value offshore projects.”
In 2024, Samsung Heavy Industries received orders for 36 new vessels for about $7.3 billion. By ship type, the order includes 22 LNG carriers, 2 Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC), 1 shuttle tanker, 4 medium-sized tankers, 4 container ships and 3 Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC). Among them, the number of environmentally friendly fuel (LNG and ammonia) vessels is 31, accounting for 86% of the total orders.
It is worth mentioning that due to the turbulent regional situation, the order for a FLNG for the Coral Sul project in Mozambique, which was originally scheduled to be signed by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2024, was postponed. The FLNG was worth US$2.5 billion, which prevented Samsung Heavy Industries from completing its order target of US$9.7 billion in 2024.
Market analysts are positive about Samsung Heavy Industries’ order outlook for 2025. It is reported that the US is expected to resume LNG exports after Trump’s inauguration. In light of this, Samsung Heavy Industries is expected to benefit from an increase in LNG carriers as well as offshore projects . According to relevant forecasts, the shipbuilder is expected to win more than $10 billion in new orders in 2025.
