CHIMBUSCO Signs MOU with World’s Largest Methanol Producer

Recently, a seminar on “Analysis and Response to EU Carbon Tax Fuel Policy for Shipping” was held in Shanghai, which was jointly organized by Baltic International Shipping Council (BIMCO), China Shipowners Association (CSA), Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and China Ocean Shipping magazine.

At the meeting, China Marine Bunker(PetroChina)Co.Ltd. (CHIMBUSCO), a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Group, and Methanex Corporation, the world’s largest producer of methanol, jointly signed a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding). Both parties will take this signing as an opportunity to give full play to their resources and market advantages to deepen the promotion and application of methanol in the shipping industry.

At the same time, CHIMBUSCO also signed a MOU on Green Fuel Cooperation with China Huadian Engineering, Inner Mongolia Huadian Mengdong Energy and Welly Environmental Protection Group. The four parties will work together to build a more complete green fuel industry chain dedicated to providing cleaner and more efficient energy solutions to promote the sustainable development of the global shipping industry.

In response to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions around 2050, CHIMBUSCO has actively fulfilled the IMO’s carbon emission reduction strategy, actively carried out the construction of green ship fuel bunkering capacity, and locked up the green methanol resources in advance, and has achieved certain results in the three aspects of leading the industry standard, accelerating technological innovation, and locking up the green ship fuel resources ahead of time.

CHIMBUSCO said that the industry’s head enterprises have joined forces to promote the comprehensive promotion and application of green methanol fuel in the ship fuel supply market, which is of great significance in responding to the European Union’s carbon tax fuel policy for shipping, promoting the green and low-carbon development of the shipping industry, as well as advancing the realization of China’s ‘dual-carbon’ strategic goal.

Previously on November 30, 2024, CHIMBUSCO completed the first real ship methanol fuel bunkering operation for COSCO Shipping. It marks that CHIMBUSCO has made a major breakthrough in the application of alternative energy for ships, and has the ability to supply marine methanol fuel onshore on a regular basis.

In addition, on November 13, 2024, CHIMBUSCO jointly initiated the establishment of the “Joint R&D Center for Sustainable Marine Fuels” with Dalian Maritime University, Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, Sinopec China Shipping Ship Fuel Supply Company, Liaoning Port Group and other organizations.
