According to Fujian Huadong Shipyard, on January 12, 2025, after a two-month overhaul, the container ship “Dali” successfully left the shipyard and set sail.
In the early morning hours of March 26, 2024, the container ship “Dali” struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., due to an “intermittent loss of power” while transiting the Port McHenry channel. “Darley arrives at Fujian Huadong Shipyard for repairs.
After the arrival of “Dali” at the shipyard, Fujian Huadong Shipyard attached great importance to it and finally completed the repair and delivery work 10 days earlier than planned, which won the high praise and trust of the shipowner.
It is understood that the “Dali” suffered serious damage in the collision, the ship lost its double anchors, the side thruster was seriously damaged, and the bow of the ship was almost a total loss. The repairs of “Dali” in Fujian Huadong Shipyard mainly involved the repair and replacement of complex structures such as bow, 1# cargo hold, mechanical equipment, hydraulic control, electrical control and other systems.
“Dali” is 300 meters long and 48 meters wide with a capacity of 9,962 TEU, including 1,400 reefer slots. The ship was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (formerly Hyundai Heavy Industries) Ulsan Shipyard in 2015 and classed by ClassNK.
The bridge collision of “Dali” has attracted global attention and caused billions of dollars in damages. The accident resulted in the severe collapse of the famous Francis Scott Key Bridge in the United States, killing six people. The wreckage and 50,000 tons of the bridge’s remains blocked the waterway, bringing all shipping in the Port of Baltimore to a standstill. The collapse of the bridge also cut off a major commuter route for the area.
It was not until June 10 that the channel was cleared and the Port of Baltimore resumed operations. The accident resulted in the closure of the main shipping lanes for nearly three months and had a significant economic impact on several U.S. industries.
As one of the many claims facing the accident, on October 25, the US Department of Justice announced that Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited, the Singaporean companies that own and operate the “Dali”, have agreed to pay a settlement of US$101.98 million to settle a civil lawsuit filed by the US Department of Justice.
The settlement does not include compensation for the reconstruction of the bridge. Reconstruction of the bridge will cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2028.
