HD Hyundai Heavy Industries kicke off Construction of Peruvian Warship Joint Construction Project

On Jan. 10 local time, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a steel cutting ceremony at Peru’s state-owned SIMA shipyard for the joint construction of four warships worth 640.6 billion won (about $462.3 million), which was signed in April last year. The new vessels are expected to be delivered to the Peruvian Navy one after another from 2026 to 2029.

The order, which includes one 3,400-ton frigate, one 2,200-ton patrol vessel, and two 1,400-ton amphibious vessels, is the largest naval vessel contract between a Latin American country and a Korean shipbuilder. The vessels will be built at SIMA Shipyard in Peru, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in charge of ship design, equipment supply and technical support.

Peruvian President Dina Boluat, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony, said, “This steel cutting ceremony will be a very important milestone in the history of Peruvian shipbuilding, and is expected to promote the modernization of the Peruvian Navy and contribute to the country’s economic growth.”

Joo Won Ho, CEO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Specialty Vessel Business, said, “We will work to smoothly advance the project based on technical force and trust to further strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.”
