BYD welcomes third 7,000 CEU dual-fuel PCTC

On January 7, Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSCC), named and delivered the BYD HEFEI, a 7,000 CEU dual-fuel PCTC (pure car and track carrier) built for BYD.

BYD 7000 CEU dual-fuel PCTC is the “green and low-carbon upgraded version 2.0” of the series of PCTCs built by GSI. The vessel is 199.9 meters in length, 38 meters in width, 9 meters in draft, and 18.5 knots in speed. It adopts LNG dual-fuel propulsion system and is equipped with permanent magnet shaft generator. It also adopts energy-saving devices, drag-reducing antifouling paint and other energy-saving measures, making it a green, intelligent, environmentally friendly and efficient car carrier.

The first vessel in the series, “EXPLORER NO.1”, made its maiden voyage on January 16, 2024, and successfully carried 5,449 BYD new energy vehicles from Shenzhen to Europe. The second vessel, BYD CHANGZHOU, also a 7,000 CEU PCTC, was delivered on November 29, 2024, and both vessels are constructed by CIMC Raffles. The owner, Zodiac Maritime, has chartered the two vessels to BYD on a long-term basis.

The contract for BYD’s two 7,000 CEU dual-fuel PCTCs constructed by GSI was signed in early 2023, and the order is the first PCTC ordered by BYD as the final cargo owner. After being put into operation, it will further enhance the guarantee capacity of China’s domestic car export transportation.

It is understood that GSI, by virtue of its own technical advantages, has received orders for nearly 40 car carriers, remaining the world’s No. 1 in this market segment. By the end of 2024, GSI has successfully built and delivered 12 7,000-vehicle LNG dual-fuel car carriers with a total of 84,000 spaces, and most of the car carriers have been delivered earlier than the contracted delivery date, with a cumulative total of more than 1,000 days ahead of the delivery date. This forward-looking layout will not only help BYD expand its market share globally, but also further consolidate its leading position in the new energy vehicle sector.
